But it's really simple when you have a simple task. And version 1 of CRISPR is best at breaking things. This breaking is called non-homologous end joining (NHEJ). It's quite powerful at breaking things in the genome and this can be put to great therapeutic use. In my time at CRISPR Therapeutics, we built an entire clinical program that essentially breaks a piece of DNA that is involved in turning of fetal hemoglobin once you're born (blue \\u03B3 line in figure below). When you break this you turn back on fetal hemoglobin and for people with Sickle Cell Disease and \\u03B2-Thalassemia this should in theory bring back a second form hemoglobin that doesn't have issues like sickling and can in turn relieve the symptoms of the disease. It turns out that seems to be working for over 20 patients to date and will hopefully be approved for treatment by the FDA and other regulatory agencies in the near future.\"), mdx(\"p\", null, mdx(\"span\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, {\n    \"className\": \"gatsby-resp-image-wrapper\",\n    \"style\": {\n      \"position\": \"relative\",\n      \"display\": \"block\",\n      \"marginLeft\": \"auto\",\n      \"marginRight\": \"auto\",\n      \"maxWidth\": \"933px\"\n    }\n  }), \"\\n      \", mdx(\"a\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"span\"\n  }, {\n    \"className\": \"gatsby-resp-image-link\",\n    \"href\": \"/static/69632184ae2c6b8a0bd4d640a30f529c/dc616/10.1056-NEJMoa2031054Figure1.png\",\n    \"style\": {\n      \"display\": \"block\"\n    },\n    \"target\": \"_blank\",\n    \"rel\": \"noopener\"\n  }), \"\\n    \", mdx(\"span\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"a\"\n  }, {\n    \"className\": \"gatsby-resp-image-background-image\",\n    \"style\": {\n      \"paddingBottom\": \"96%\",\n      \"position\": \"relative\",\n      \"bottom\": \"0\",\n      \"left\": \"0\",\n      \"backgroundImage\": \"url('data:image/png;base64,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')\",\n      \"backgroundSize\": \"cover\",\n      \"display\": \"block\"\n    }\n  })), \"\\n  \", mdx(\"img\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"a\"\n  }, {\n    \"className\": \"gatsby-resp-image-image\",\n    \"alt\": \"10.1056-NEJMoa2031054Figure1\",\n    \"title\": \"10.1056-NEJMoa2031054Figure1\",\n    \"src\": \"/static/69632184ae2c6b8a0bd4d640a30f529c/dc616/10.1056-NEJMoa2031054Figure1.png\",\n    \"srcSet\": [\"/static/69632184ae2c6b8a0bd4d640a30f529c/5a46d/10.1056-NEJMoa2031054Figure1.png 300w\", \"/static/69632184ae2c6b8a0bd4d640a30f529c/0a47e/10.1056-NEJMoa2031054Figure1.png 600w\", \"/static/69632184ae2c6b8a0bd4d640a30f529c/dc616/10.1056-NEJMoa2031054Figure1.png 933w\"],\n    \"sizes\": \"(max-width: 933px) 100vw, 933px\",\n    \"style\": {\n      \"width\": \"100%\",\n      \"height\": \"100%\",\n      \"margin\": \"0\",\n      \"verticalAlign\": \"middle\",\n      \"position\": \"absolute\",\n      \"top\": \"0\",\n      \"left\": \"0\"\n    },\n    \"loading\": \"lazy\"\n  })), \"\\n  \"), \"\\n    \")), mdx(\"p\", null, mdx(\"a\", _extends({\n    parentName: \"p\"\n  }, {\n    \"href\": \"https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2031054\"\n  }), \"The full NEJM paper\")), mdx(\"h2\", null, \"Off-target editing\"), mdx(\"p\", null, \"But CRISPR can edit outside of its intended editing on-target region.
